What is a membrane keyboard?

A membrane keyboard is a type of keyboard used in many electronic devices, such as industrial, military, and medical equipment. It typically consists of several thin layers of flexible material, often polyester or polycarbonate, sandwiched on top of each other.

The top layer of the membrane keyboard is usually transparent and has contact areas printed with conductive patterns. When a key is pressed, it presses against the top layer, making contact with the conductive patterns and thus completing an electrical circuit. This action then sends an electrical signal to the device to which the keyboard is connected, allowing it to interpret the corresponding command.

Membrane keyboards offer several advantages, including low manufacturing costflat and compact designresistance to dust and liquids, and increased durability.

Design and Integration

Most membrane keyboards have an adhesive film on the back, but it is also possible to integrate them into a support, such as a case or remote control, thus offering mounting flexibility.

A wide choice of materials

We offer a wide range of materials for the user interface, including polyester, aluminum, silicone, polycarbonate, sheet steel, PVC and stainless steel. This variety of materials allows for maximum customization in terms of color, shape and size of the keys. In addition, thanks to advanced production and printing processes, such as screen printing, digital printing, laser engraving and paint finishing, we can offer single-color or multi-color keyboards, printed, embossed, painted or engraved.

Tactile properties

The touch sensations and tactile properties of a membrane keyboard are determined by the surface finish and the tactile forces (actuation and reset). For membrane keyboards, we use metal domes or polydomes as switching devices, thus providing high intuitiveness and optimal responsiveness. In addition, we offer different shapes of metal domes with different possible treatments (gold or nickel ), as well as the possibility of mixing keys of different forces and sizes on the same keyboard.

Backlighting and Connectivity

Membrane keyboards can be backlit by LED, EL or fiber optics, providing optimum visibility in all lighting conditions. In addition, we offer different types of ribbon cable outputs, male/female connectors, reinforced sealing levels (IP 65) and increased resistance to extreme conditions, as well as mechanical supports with various choices of surface treatments.
